Tips from the Artist
Few people in the 16th and 17th century had the ability to read or write. Yet, what they lacked in formal education they made up for by displaying a remarkable degree of pictorial comprehension. Regrettably, that is a skill which many of us no longer possess or cultivate. Of course, with a bit of imagination anyone can grasp the overall gist of a vanitas piece, but without a deeper understanding of the esoteric iconography of the Baroque period the subtle nuances of a piece are altogether lost.
If you enjoyed the artist's vanitas collection and would like to broaden your insight about the significance of individual pieces, please visit this page regularly to read the artist's free tips which will be release periodically starting in late 2008.
